College Entrance Testing Information
- The two primary college entrance exams are the ACT and the SAT.
- Almost all colleges will accept, and require, scores from either exam as part of the application process.
- There is a fee to register for these tests, however if paying for these tests would be a burden to your family, fee waivers will be available from Mrs. O'Quinn in the Counseling Office starting in mid-October.
- Some Colleges are test-optional.
- This means you will not need to provide SAT or ACT scores.
- 2-year or Community Colleges in general do not require either SAT or ACT test scores.
- There are many ways to prepare for the ACT or SAT exams.
- All students have access to the Learning Express test preparation tools offered by the State Library of Oregon through their student CIS accounts. To access these tools, students would log into CIS, click on the "My Portfolio" tab and under the "Helpful Tools" menu, click on "Learning Express". Once students are on the Learning Express page they should look for the College Admissions test preparation section for resources specific to the test they are taking.
- Khan Academy provides free online test prep for the SAT. This is a tremendous service! Follow this link to learn more!
- ACT has several test prep options on their website. Some are fee based, but many are free. Follow this link to learn more!
- Tutor List: The district has collated a list of people who have indicated they are eligible for tutoring; the list includes those who tutor for the SAT and ACT tests. PLEASE NOTE: This list does not constitute a recommendation by the Beaverton School District. As noted on the document: "The tutors listed below have not been interviewed by the District regarding the qualification for tutoring. Similarly, the District does not perform any criminal background check on the tutors found on this list, unless they are currently employed by the Beaverton School District. Families wishing to employ a tutor from this list do so at their own risk, and are strongly advised to do their own screening regarding references, qualification, and criminal background."
- The Kaplan Test Prep company hosts free online Practice Test sessions. Please be aware that this company offers many fee-based services as well, so be careful when selecting options on the website.
At Mountainside we are making plans to offer the following college entrance exams:
- PSAT/NMSQT
- The 2018-2019 PSAT test date is Wednesday, 10/10/18. Students can sign up for the test with Mrs. Bennett in the Counseling Office.
- The College Board website has lots of information about the PSAT and how to prepare for it.
- ACT
- Mountainside will offer the ACT free to all juniors on April 2, 2019. Students will take the test during the school day here at school.
- If students want to register to take the ACT additional times on their own, they should visit the ACT website to learn more.
