The goal of Community Service activities is to engage in meaningful work that benefits others, or the community at large. At Mountainside, we believe that Community Service is also a way that our students can live out one of our school's core values- CONNECT- and so we have included a Community Service hour requirement into our .5 Career Education credit.
To help students and families learn more about this Community Service requirement, we created a "Frequently Asked Questions" document. This should answer many of the commonly asked questions; please also see below for further details.

There are a variety of ways that students can be involved in Community Service. The Community Service Student Expectations document has a detailed description of Mountainside's program requirements, and the types of activities that qualify for Community Service hours.
As you will see noted on that Student Expectations document, a "pre-approval" signature from a Mountainside staff member is required for all community service activities. This is to help make sure that the proposed activity will meet the guidelines of our program. The pre-approval signatures and the required post-activity reflection can all be completed on the Community Service Pre-Approval and Reflection Form. Printed copies of this forms are also available in the Counseling Office.
If students volunteer at the same location for multiple days, they only need to complete one Pre-Approval and Reflection Form and they should use this Hour Log to document the various days/hours worked and tasks completed.
Students should turn in their Reflection Forms as soon as possible after completing the community service activity, and the forms must be turned in by the end of the school day on Friday, May 31, 2019 to have the hours counted towards the 2018-2019 school year. (Forms submitted after that will have the hours counted towards the 2019-2020 school year.)

Please note: we are providing this list for the convenience of families. Mountainside does not provide any screening of these agencies. Families should do their own research about the volunteer opportunities available to students through these organizations and determine for themselves whether the opportunities are suitable and appropriate for their children.
